Virginia Autism Council Skill Competencies for Professionals and Paraprofessionals in Virginia Supporting Individuals with Autism Across the Lifespan
To guide best practice in supporting individuals with autism across the state and personnel development of professionals, the Virginia Autism Council developed the Skill Competencies for Professionals and Paraprofessionals in Virginia Supporting Individuals with Autism across the Lifespan. These competencies are established using consistent findings from the research community and are based on the best and most promising practices that have been identified through research as critical to address the needs of individuals with autism. These Competencies focus on assessment of individual needs and program planning rather than the diagnosis of autism and were developed to provide a comprehensive list of skills and knowledge needed to effectively serve this population.
The Virginia Autism Council, and its supporting state agencies, are disseminating this document which may be used as a foundation to develop personnel training and higher education in autism in Virginia. The document can also be used as a guide for parents and families to understand the skills needed by staff who might work with their family members with autism.
